Why teeth whitening is so important, you can ask. The best answer to that question is as simple as the importance of one’s appearance. Teeth whitening helps to get a younger and fresher look.

According to one of 2008 studies, depending on age around 12% and up to more than 15% of UK adult population was dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth in general and around 18% and up to 22% was dissatisfied with their tooth color in particular.

In the USA it is reported that 34% of the adult population was dissatisfied with their current tooth color and in China, this figure was found to be more than 52% in an urban population.

How to whiten teeth naturally?

As we all know tooth color can indeed have a big impact on one’s insecurity problems. Despite that teeth whitening in a professional way demands quite a fortune. However, these little DIY teeth whitening techniques can become a good helping hand in achieving your goal.

Dietary Changes

The first technique deserved to talk about include all the changes every one of us can make ourselves for whiter teeth and oral health in general.

Having teeth with abnormal color is quite often a choice we make by ourselves: we choose to smoke, to drink a lot of coffee and colorful sodas, beverages rich with tannins such as wine and tea. Eliminating all those foods and drinks that leave a mark on our teeth can really help in teeth whitening.

People who are concerned about their teeth color should avoid the excessive usage of citrus, coffee, and soda because they are rich with acids that harm tooth enamel. Alternatively, they should at least brush their teeth after the consumption of those products. But don’t forget that dentists don’t recommend brushing right away: you should wait about 30 minutes after eating. The reason for that is behind the ability of acids to weaken enamel, therefore brushing too soon can cause a lot of damage.

Quitting smoking can definitely reduce the risk of nicotine stains you can hardly remove. It can also prevent tooth decay and gum disease, both of which damage the enamel and can cause big oral health problems.

Brushing with Baking Soda

MDHealth.com states that baking soda is a good weapon against all the stains and discolorations on the surface of one’s tooth. With cleaning the enamel it gives quite a good appearance to teeth and makes them whiter and brighter. That's why it's very commonly used as a good substitution for a toothpaste.

However, it’s important to note that overuse of baking soda as a whitener can have the opposite effect. Its excessive use can break down your enamel over time with making your teeth more sensitive. The best amount of brushing with baking soda is limited to 2 or 3 times per week.

Using Hydrogen Peroxide

According to another 2014 study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene, hydrogen peroxide can once again fight against enamel stains.

Peroxide is working better in combination with baking soda. The homemade toothpaste of peroxide and soda is always there to make your smile brighter. What it means is that peroxide’s overuse can also cause tooth sensitivity, and if you have naturally sensitive teeth, it’s better to be more cautious.

Whitening with Fruits and Vegetables

When talking about natural teeth whitening it would be inappropriate not to mention all the fruits and vegetables we were awarded. It’s known that eating raw fruits and vegetables with high-water content help to keep teeth clean and shiny.

Besides, it’s claimed that the water in those vegetables usually cleanses plaque from your teeth and gums which leads to healthy oral hygiene.

Strawberries

The secret ingredient in strawberries for being a good teeth whiteners is the malic acid that they contain in a great quantity. Malic acid is a perfect tool against extrinsic stains usually left on teeth.

There exist 2 ways of using strawberries as a teeth whitener. The first one doesn’t require any effort but just simply rubbing a whole strawberry across each tooth for a few seconds. After just rinse your mouth clean with water to remove all the leftovers. 

The second way is the technique of making a strawberry toothpaste. To make it all you have to do is mash/crush 1 or 2 (depending on the size) strawberries and add about a ½ spoon of baking soda. Afterward spread the mixture onto your teeth and leave it for at least 5 minutes. When the time is up, just gently clean each tooth with a wet toothbrush. You should use mouthwash or, better, floss to extract all the little pieces of the strawberries left if any exists. Use this technique twice a week and see the amazing results.

However, a study has shown that a strawberry and baking soda mixture is not as effective as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is. In reverse, it gives you the opportunity to have healthier teeth with a tastier method.

Bananas

Another yummy technique for teeth whitening is a banana peel. This DIY method comes with a small gift of enjoying a tasty banana beforehand as all you need is a banana peel. The secret ingredients are magnesium, manganese, and potassium which banana peels are rich with. Those compounds strengthen the tooth enamel giving it a bright shine.

This technique is quite similar to the previous one because once again you should rub a banana peel on your teeth, much like you would do with the strawberries, for about 2 minutes. Afterward, just brush your teeth the regular way and enjoy your shiny smile.

One of the advantages of this method is its total harmlessness. Besides being quite a tasty fruit, bananas are vitamin-rich and include a lot of minerals which are very essential for teeth and gums. In addition, they don’t contain any acids or other abrasives that can possibly harm one’s teeth because of too much use. Due to that exceptional advantage, there are no limits for this technique: it can surely become a part of your daily routine.

Crunchy fruits and veggies

It would be stupid to ignore the power of crunchy stuff like apples, carrots, and celery. They’re sharp and abrasive which means that they’ll rub against the highest surface of your teeth without harming it.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Besides, the usage of ACV as a teeth whitener can be as simple as just rubbing it on your teeth with your finger or toothbrush for about a minute or 2 respectively and rinsing your mouth with water or hydrogen peroxide afterward.

It’s important to note that due to the big amount of acids that ACV includes, it’s not advisable to use this technique more than once or twice a week.

Oil Pulling

This technique is yet the oldest one of homemade remedies for teeth whitening, cavity reducing and oral health improving but to this day there are no reliable scientific studies that can confirm that hypothesis, states American Dental Association.

Despite this, some research claims that using oils as a mouthwash can have quite a good impact on your oral health and be a good homemade tool for dental care. Besides, a 2015 study found that the usage of coconut oil is a promising way against gingivitis (it easily reduces the plaque formation).

Oil pulling is the term for washing a mouth with oil to remove any kind of bacteria, dirt or debris. For this method, all you have to do is rinsing your mouth with oil for about a minute after brushing your teeth.

Oil suitable for oil pulling include especially these 3:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Sesame Oil

Activated Charcoal

Yet the most surprising but one of the best ways of homemade teeth whitening techniques. It’s believed that the activated charcoal, as an absorbing product used to trap toxins inside the body, may also help whiten your teeth by absorbing plaque and microscopic tidbits causing stains.

A research from 2015 states that activated charcoal is more abrasive than a whitening toothpaste on acrylic resins. However, it definitely should be noted that charcoal powder can end up becoming embedded in some defects including margins or cracks especially present on older teeth.

There are different ways of the usage of activated charcoal. The best ones among them are:

  • Gently brushing with the charcoal from freshly opened capsule for about 2 minutes. Be especially careful in the area of your gums as the charcoal is very abrasive. Afterward, just spit it out.
  • Dabbing it on your teeth and leaving on for 2 minutes.
    This way is more acceptable for people with sensitive teeth or the ones who want to reduce the abrasiveness of charcoal.
  • Mixing the charcoal with a small amount of water to make a mouthwash. Swish this solution for 2 minutes and then spit it out. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after to prevent activated charcoal leftovers.

Good Oral Hygiene

None of the methods stated above will work properly without taking good care of your oral hygiene. The shiny and healthy smile comes with a big effort.

  • Your teeth are always clean and free of debris,
  • Gums have a good pink color and don’t hurt when you brush or floss,
  • Bad breath is not a recurring problem.

  • Brushing thoroughly twice a day for at least 2 minutes and flossing daily
  • Eating balanced and limiting snacks between meals
